Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the following areas: aesthetic expression, citizenship, communication, personal development, problem solving and technological competence.
Over the course of the semester you will be given opportunities to develop these skills through a variety of activities carried out within the following units:
Writing Workshop: EssaysStrong essay writing skills are necessary and important in high school. We will focus on developing the required skills through process writing, group work and practice. All essays will be kept in a folder designed to help students and the teacher monitor individual development. Essay writing will continue throughout the entire semester.

Independent Novel Study (part I):
During the semester Students will choose one novel to read independently and complete a variety of assignments on that novel. The only major requirement is that it is a book that has been made into a movie.
Initial novel assignment
1. Vocabulary Log (quote the page number for each word used) .Choose 15 words that you do not know the meaning of. Record the dictionary definition for each word.
1. Describe an experience you (or someone else you know) had that was like the experience of a character in the book.
1. After completing the book, watch the movie and site at least 5 differences in detail.
Shakespeare and Twelfth Night
(PARENTS:For help teaching Twelfth Night you may want to buy: Shakespeare Set Free: Teaching Twelfth Night and Othello and also watch the 2003 version of the movie Twelfth Night to show your student before beginning to read the play. You will see a man's hiney getting out of the bathtub but nothing trashy. You can get the movie on Netflix.)
We will be reading Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, getting familiar with his language, and discovering how a 400 year old play still connects to our lives today.
TERM TWO
Essays:
We will continue our work with essay writing in term two focusing on fine-tuning our skills.
Independent Novel Study (part II):Novels are to be completed in the beginning of term two and final novel work will be completed.
The Short Story
We will study a variety of short stories.

The Lottery
We will be examining the various elements that make up the story and focusing on comprehension, interpretation, personal reflection, and connection to everyday life.
Poetry
We will become familiar with POETIC TERMINOLOGY and
apply our understanding of these terms to a variety of POEMS and
SONG LYRICS.
We will also test our creative juices by writing poetry.
